32 samples of the genus Thryonomys swinderianus (big gras-cutter) were dissected to examine their musculature of the limbs and value their zoological grade by comparing their extremities to domestic guinea-pigs. The zoological grade and the musculature of the limbs are discussed in the first part of the documentation. The Thryonomys is subordinated in the Hystricomorpha. Some authors view hem as a typical Old world representative of this subordination. There is very little literatur about the muscular system. The second part of the documentation is a discription of guinea-pigs under the same aspects. The New world representative of the Hystricomorpha, to which the guinea-pigs count, will often be registered to its own subordination, the Caviomorpha. The results of the examination are being compared with existing literature and the differences are being discussed. There is much similarity between the musculature of the extremities in both animal varities. According to the myology it is possible to give up the modification Old and New world Hystricomorpha in advantage of a common subordination.
